The favorites have had their way in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and there are exactly zero Cinderella stories this year with the possible exception of 10th seeded Arkansas, but it’s hard to consider a John Calipari coached team any kind of underdog. Doug places the blame squarely on the inequities inherent in the N.I.L. system which rewards schools with the most resources. It’s harder now for a smaller school to make a run when they are playing teams that spend so much more money on players.
Doug Gottlieb: “We have made it nearly impossible to ever have a Butler, to ever have a...George Mason, to ever have a VCU, to ever have one of those. It’s one thing to pull off a one-game upset, something that really can truly happen this year, it’s a whole other thing to pull off four consecutive upsets against teams with 20, 30, 40-times the money.”
