LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Kenny Payne is the new men's basketball coach at the University of Louisville.
Payne returns to the school that he helped lead as a player to the 1986 national championship. He is the first Black head coach in program history.
UofL signed Payne to a six-year contract with a base salary of $3.3 million.
A former assistant coach with the New York Knicks and at Kentucky, Payne is now tasked with reviving a Louisville program that is coming off one of its worst seasons ever. He succeeds Chris Mack, who parted ways with the school mid-season. UofL continues to await possible NCAA sanctions.
