(Cincinnati, OH) - Bad blood boiled over at Great American Ball Park between the Reds and Pirates.
With Pittsburgh leading 11-3 with two outs in the ninth, Cincinnati reliever Amir Garrett, who had just surrendered a home run, sprinted from a meeting at the mound toward the Bucs' dugout, inciting a bench-clearing brawl.
Garrett wildly swung at Pirates' pitcher Trevor Williams, and was tackled.
Cincinnati manager David Bell, who had been ejected in the bottom of the eighth, returned to the field and ended up at the bottom of the pile.
The inciting incident was an up-and-in pitch on Cincinnati utilityman Derek Dietrich in the bottom of the seventh by Pittsburgh reliever Keone Kela.
Dietrich, who has homered six times against the Bucs this season, was at the epicenter of an April brawl between the two teams in Pittsburgh.
After the inning, Reds first baseman Joey Votto made his way across the infield, shouting at Kela, who was in the dugout. In the ninth, reliever Jared Hughes was ejected for hitting the Pirates' Starling Marte.
It's the second time this season the two teams have been involved in a bench-clearing brawl. Punches were also thrown April 7th when the teams went at it in Pittsburgh.
Reds outfielder Yasiel Puig, bench coach Freddie Benavides and Garrett were all ejected after the fight. Hughes and Bell had been ejected earlier.
Reports had surfaced online about 30 minutes prior to the brawl that Puig had been traded to Cleveland in a deal for Indians pitcher Trevor Bauer.
Pirates pitchers Trevor Williams, Chris Archer, Kyle Crick and catcher Francisco Cervelli were ejected. None of the four were in the game.
Bell's ejection was his eighth of the season, the most in the Reds' 129-year history.
Reds Obtain Bauer, Trade Puig In Blockbuster
(Cincinnati, OH) - The Reds are adding to their starting rotation. Multiple reports say they've acquired right-hander Trevor Bauer from the Indians for outfielder Yasiel Puig in a three-team deal that includes the Padres.
Bauer was traded two days after he threw the ball from the mound over the center-field fence in Kansas City.
In addition to Puig, the Reds sent minor league left-hander Scott Moss to Cleveland and top outfield prospect Taylor Trammell to San Diego.
The Padres sent Franmil Reyes, Logan Allen and Victor Nova to the Tribe.
